As you sailed into your final port, the waters were calm, the skies were clear.

When we look at the stars, we will find you. The stars will be laughing--and we will laugh together.

Thoughts

I was a young mariner back in 1992 and needed to upgrade my USCG license quickly for a job. I needed immediate help on several subjects. My dad suggested that I walk into the Seamen's Church Institute, in Lower Manhattan, and see if they had study books. Better than that, I met Captain Beadon, who got me over the hurdle with that exam. I had no idea then that he would become a mentor and good friend to both myself and my family. There were more exams after that, of course, and he continuously helped me with my studies. I will miss him dearly. Thanks for everything, Captain Beadon. You truly were a great friend.

Richard, was such an compelling man. His knowledge of how the world worked was immeasurable. He was a great story teller, particularly of fascinating events & was always willing to share them. On one occasion I asked him how passenger ships didn’t topple over in inclement weather. He tried to explain until 1am one night, but realised I was not getting it, he wouldn’t give up & so he compiled a 35 page powerpoint presentation instead! He really lived life to its maximum. His memory & historical knowledge was amazing, but most of all, he was the most honest, kindest, generous, honourable man of great principle, he was engaging & hugely loyal…….. but it came with a really wicked dry sense of humour. We wish we had known him for a lot longer, moving in to Meadow Court on the same day, where our friendship immediately clicked. I just wish to illustrate Richard’s humour. Last summer, a letter came thru my letterbox, which had been previously opened & resealed. Inside was a letter with a set of mint Shirley Bassey Postage stamps in a presentation folder. Attached was post-it note, saying sorry, opened in error. As I looked closer at the letter, it said it was a press release from Reuters & the Associated press. I was baffled wondering why it had been addressed to me. The document explained how Miss Bassey had dedicated the honour of the new stamps to a fellow citizen from Wales. There were quotes from the First Minister of Wales, The Prime Minister & the Leader of the opposition. All referencing the fellow citizen……who was apparently me. My blood ran cold, until I read the final line of the article which said, Miss Bassey, had no knowledge of Mr Nash’s whereabouts, all she knew was he was residing in luxury flats, which were being more accurately described as “if not luxury, they were quite nice really”. I fell about laughing realising Richard’s paw prints were all over this.
